Low Level Laser Therapy

How Do Low Level Lasers Work?

In Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) (Prima Books), Turner & Hode explain that low level laser therapy:

  • Reduces pain by causing the production of endorphins - our body's natural painkillers.
  • Reduces inflammation by suppressing inflammatory enzymes that create swelling, redness, pain and heat and enhances the release of anti-inflammatory enzymes.
  • Enhances lymphatic drainage, which increases circulation and helps speed healing.
  • Releases tight muscles (both smooth and striated) that create chronic pain, joint problems and decreased mobility.
  • Speeds bone repair by stimulating fibroblastic and osteoblastic proliferation.
  • In the correct frequency appears to be antiviral, antifungal and antiherpetic.
  • Enhances the immune system.
  • Re-energizes cell membranes to allow osmosis (the transfer of nutrients across the cell wall) to occur.
  • Increases collagen synthesis.
Is Low Level Laser Therapy Safe?
Laser therapy is safe and effective

Industry has been using laser diodes for years in such applications as bar code checkout systems, CD players, laser printers and pointers. The FDA has listed bio-stimulation lasers as non-significant risk devices. The low level lasers that we use have received UL approval, and have been registered with the FDA for safety. Over 2,000 worldwide studies have shown that low level laser therapy is totally safe.

Clinical Research Probes The Effectiveness of Low Level Laser Therapy

The following is just a few of the thousands of studies that have been performed that prove the effectiveness of LLLT:

Blood Pressure - the results from a group of 30 patients suffering from hypertension were positive in 80% of the patients.

Tennis Elbow - complete pain relief and restored functional ability were achieved in 82% of acute patients and 66% of chronic cases.

Fibromyalgia - 2/3rds benefited from the treatment with regard to local pain, hypermobility and phlogosis.

Headache/Migraine - pain disappeared after 1 - 5 minutes.

Low Back Pain - treatment was effective in 71% of the laser group.

Rheumatoid Arthritis - (hand) grip strength and movement were improved while swelling, pain and morning stiffness were reduced.

Menstrual Pain - of 12 patients treated, 10 were freed of pain.

Chronic Joint Disorders - of 565 patients treated, 95% showed an improvement in pain.

Wound Healing - all lesions presented acceleration of the healing process.

Bone Regeneration - study findings showed that the use of a stimulating laser significantly improved bone healing at early stages.

Increased Collagen Production - many different studies have been performed that show a positive relation to increased collagen synthesis.
